Historical Meaning of the Award
The physical medal of the Golden Image Award carries several symbolic components: the globe represents Liberia as part of the global village; the lady with traditional hair attire represents Africa’s first democratically elected female president; the map of Liberia on the tower reflects national renewal and prosperity; and the peace symbol represents peace with the world and within Liberia.
About the Convener of the GIA
The democratically elected President of the Republic of Liberia is always the convener of the award during Liberia’s Independence anniversary celebration. His Excellency Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., President of Liberia, is recognized as the current convener.
President Boakai is known for extensive public service, agricultural development, rural community projects, preservation of Liberian traditions and culture, and his strong connection to Liberian proverbs and parables.


Dr. George Manneh Weah
Former President Dr. George Manneh Weah, former convener of the Golden Image Award, is recognized as one of Liberia’s distinguished global icons, a champion of peace, humanitarian service and sports excellence.
He was honored as a Golden Image Award recipient in 2011 for outstanding contributions to sports, peacebuilding, youth empowerment and national development.
Her Excellency Ellen Johnson Sirleaf
The image of the Golden Image Award is Her Excellency Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, former President of Liberia and Africa’s first democratically elected female Head of State. She represents courage, gender equality, democracy, good governance, peace and transformational leadership.
Her image reflects the award’s message of dignity, courage, women’s leadership, peace and transformational service.
